“The colourful series of chess pieces got its start from an exhibition with Keiu Koppel. We held a meeting while swinging at the children’s playground in Pelgulinn. Somehow, both of us were fascinated by life on the other side of the mirror and the story of “Alice in Wonderland”. In particular, the game that was played with cards and the seemingly real life on a chessboard. That the steps you decide to take will determine your future destiny. The difference with real life is that you can always start over again. This is where my idea began, to give old, worn chess pieces a new cloak in a so-called new life, or the jewellery world. This is how my chess piece jewellery series developed and so far my interest has not waned. Customers still want a piece with a better position than simply a pawn, but the king in fact, is by nature the weakest.

A new topic has emerged for me, that I personally encounter and ponder on a daily basis. It’s faith. Faith in yourself, in others, in life – the strength, that is actually behind it. I recently made a necklace,  inspired by gratitude and with a dedication, for a man whom I myself call Captain Drum. The necklace is Captain Drum’s helm, which helps him to sail on the waves of the sea of life and at the same time keeps him focused on the things that are important in his life – for this reason, an Oregon sunstone has been placed in the centre of the wheel, which will illuminate the way in the dark. This piece of jewellery was born out of gratitude towards Captain Drum, who with his masculine, yet soft nature, has been able to bring back the soul of witch Emmeliine, who escaped into the forest, by simply believing in her.” – Margit Paulin at the A-Gallery exhibition MEMORY CARDS (2019)
